  • Next DS To Have HD Screen, Potentially 720p [Nintendods]

Boy, that Satoru Iwata has been awfully mouthy recently. In addition to sounding off about the next DS having a motion sensor, he also told Asahi that it’ll have a higher-resolution screen. A HIGH DEFINITION screen.

Upgrading the 256 x 192 DS, the next DS incarnation—after the DSi XL—will have a 1024 x 768 screen according to several sites, which is very close to a decent 720p res. Iwata also confirmed Nintendo is in talks with several networks for connected DS consoles, which is something he mentioned a few months back when he touched upon the likelihood of allowing ebooks to be downloaded over 3G. • Mariah Carey Drunk

My goodness indeed. Mariah Carey was certainly ‘high’ on life winning this award! “Sorry,” Carey told Precious director Lee Daniels at the award podium, giggling madly. “Sometimes I get a little… you know, difficult.”Director Lee Daniels escorted the unsteady MC to the stage and watched in awe as she stumbled through her words, giggled with the audience and hinted that she’d too much to drink. Carey hesitated for a few seconds, looked to the ceiling, sighed and said: “Please forgive me, because I’m a little bit, um …” An audience member finished the sentence for her, to which she replied, “Yeah!” with a laugh.Carey was presented with the prize for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire, by the film’s director, Lee Daniels.

However, when the singer took the stage at the California event she stumbled through her words, giggling with the audience and hinting she had too much to drink.

Carey turned to Daniels with a bizarre beginning to her acceptance speech, saying, “Oh my goodness! I don’t think they understand the kitten in cotton thing. No we don’t. Ok, I love you.”

Pausing to address the crowd, she added, “I have to say this is – and please forgive me because I’m a little bit um… yeah. Oh my goodness…”

  • ABC News embraces the nonsense | Bad Astronomy

You may have heard the recent news that an expert panel of pediatricians reviewed the literature on gastrointestinal disorders and autism, and found no link between them. A key phrase in their findings was

The existence of a gastrointestinal disturbance specific to persons with ASDs (eg, “autistic enterocolitis”) has not been established.

They also found that there was no evidence that special diets help autistic kids. Mind you, this was a panel of 28 experts, scientists who have devoted their careers and lives to investigating autism.

So if you were a reporter at ABC News, who would you turn to to get an opinion on this? If you said Jenny McCarthy, then give yourself a gold star, because that’s just what ABC News did. Go and watch that interview (have some antacid ready). In it, she says that scientists need to take anecdotes seriously, a statement so awful it’s hard to know where to start with it.

Jenny Mccarthy and syringe, smallFirst of all, scientists did take the anecdotes seriously. That’s why they investigated any possible links between GI disorders, diets, and autism. What they found was that there is no link.

Second, McCarthy confuses anecdotes with data. As I have said before, anecdotes are where you start an investigation, not where you finish one. That’s the difference between science (aka reality) and nonsense. You can convince yourself of all manners of silliness through personal experience. I decide to whistle before drinking my coffee one morning, and I find a $20 bill in the street. So does that mean if I whistle every morning before my java I will find money? No, of course not. But that’s precisely the type of thinking McCarthy is promoting.

Getting back to ABC News, they also posted a story that tries to throw all sorts of doubt on the results of the report by the pediatric experts. I suppose they’re trying to find balance and all that in this issue, but again, as I have said before, sometimes stories don’t have two sides. There is reality, and there’s fantasy.

Should they post a rebuttal by an astrologer every time we find a new extrasolar planet? How about getting a creationist’s opinion on a new malaria vaccine?

Sadly, Jenny McCarthy is news because she’s the voice of a group of people who listen to her, but that’s at least in part due to the fact that the news organizations treat her seriously. It’s a self-fulfilling news cycle, and ABC News just gave it another nice little boost.

Shame on you, ABC News. Shame.

Happily, not every news outlet is so gullible. USA Today just posted a great article about the dangers of not vaccinating your kids, and they don’t pull any punches. Because people like Jenny McCarthy muddy the waters and add so much noise to the real science, people are turning away from real medicine and embracing “alternative” methods that we know don’t work.

The result it not just that kids who need help aren’t getting it (the so-called “what’s the harm?” fallacy). The result is that kids are getting sick, and some of them are dying. When you reject reality and turn to nonsense, it has real effects. And it’s not just affecting your kids, it affects all kids.

Talk to your physician about vaccines, autism, and diets. Read the real work being done.

Tip o’ the syringe to Gary Schwitzer.

  • 21 iPhone Puzzle Games to Kill Time With

I think I’ve spent more time playing games on my iPhone than I have on my old Playstation, Playstation 2 or Wii. It simply boils down to the fact that whenever I’m standing around waiting in a line, waiting for the train or in a dentist’s office, I can pull out my phone and have a quick game of something. Having a great choice of games in your pocket means you never need to be bored again while waiting around.

Here are my 21 favorite games to wait around with. • Northwestern Memorial Expands Radiosurgery Program to Treat Tumors Throughout the Body

New Equipment Offers Focused Radiation Treatment to more Patients in Need

Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the only academic medical center in Chicago to offer Gamma Knife radiosurgery, has enhanced its radiosurgery program by upgrading to the most sophisticated equipment available for treating cancerous tumors and lesions.

The new generation technology – the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion and the Elekta Axesse – uses focused radiation therapy to treat tumors, while providing greater precision and an application for use beyond the brain to other parts of the body.

“When this technology was first introduced, it changed the way we approach brain cancer,” said John A. Kalapurakal, MD, radiation oncologist and co-director of the radiosurgery program at Northwestern Memorial.

“Now, it’s changing the way we approach cancer in other parts of the body as well.”

“The enhancements we’ve made will allow us to use focused radiation treatment, known as radiosurgery, to treat select tumors of the brain, lung, spine, liver, pancreas and prostate, as well as many pediatric tumors,” adds Kalapurakal, who is also a professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Through radiosurgery, doctors focus beams of radiation directly on a lesion or tumor.

Individual radiation beams are too weak to damage the healthy tissue they cross on their way to the target, however when the beams are focused precisely on the tumor or lesion, they intersect to provide a combined level of radiation strong enough to destroy the diseased area.

“Our brain radiosurgery program has been in place for more than 10 years, during which time we’ve seen countless examples of how radiosurgery can benefit patients,” said Robert M. Levy, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon, co-director of the radiosurgery program and professor of neurological surgery and radiation oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

“The new equipment will allow us to provide an advanced level of treatment to a larger group of patients, many of whom have inoperable tumors that previously had few treatment options.”

Radiation therapy is used to treat approximately 60 percent of all cancer patients at Northwestern Memorial, with more than 22,000 treatments delivered annually.

Patients treated can be as young as four months old through the hospital’s affiliation with Children’s Memorial Hospital. Northwestern Memorial is one of only a few medical centers in the United States to offer Gamma Knife radiosurgery to both adult and pediatric patients, making it a destination for many throughout the country.

In addition to benefiting a larger group of patients, this modern radiosurgery equipment will enhance patient comfort through shorter treatment sessions while delivering a more precise and accurate treatment.

The technology can also be used to treat disorders beyond cancer, including vascular abnormalities, chronic pain and benign tumors. Northwestern Memorial began using the new radiosurgery technology in January 2010.

“This is a notable enhancement to our program,” said Bharat Mittal, MD, chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial. “We are committed to providing patients with the most advanced therapies possible to treat their cancer.”

Eton's Scorpion: multi-functional tool for adventurers

Eton showed its SCORPION for the first time today at CES. It’s terming the unit a “solar-powered, all-terrain, multi-functional unit”, but that really doesn’t quite capture how impressive this ruggedised device actually is, particularly given its recommended price of USD50. For starters, power can come three ways: via solar panel, dynamo hand-crank, or DC adapter, allowing use anywhere. Its ruggedised appearance, aluminum carabiner clip and LED flashlight leave no doubt it is aimed directly at the adventurer, particularly so with its offering immediate detailed weather conditions via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather bands. But wait, there’s more …..

  • DM2® Series C safety valves

ROSS CONTROLS® is proud to announce that its DM2® Series C safety valves have received third-party certification from the BG
(Berufsgenossenschaften- German Institute for Occupational Safety and Health).

The DM2® Series pneumatic safety valves meet all global requirements for machine safety and are commonly used for exhausting the downstream air to help meet stop-time requirements in machine guarding applications.

Because many safety systems incorrectly focus solely on the
electrical design and overlook mechanical elements, ROSS created the DM2® Series to address this issue knowing that effective safety systems do not end at the electrical wire.

For enhanced performance and value, memory, monitoring, and airflow control functions are simply integrated into two identical valve elements. DM2® Series C valves lock out due to asynchronous movement of valve elements during actuation or de-actuation, resulting in a residual outlet pressure of less than one percent of supply.

Overt action is required for reset, and reset can only be accomplished by applying a remote air signal or by energizing the integrated electrical (solenoid) reset. These ROSS safety valves are base-mounted and are available in ¼” to 1-1/2” ports sizes with NPT or BSPP threads.

Additionally, all DM2® Series valves will be labeled with the CE (Conformite Europeenne) mark to comply with the New Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) that takes effect in the European Union as of December 29, 2009.

This directive defines the requirements for the CE marking of products, requires the CE mark on safety components, and specifically includes “…valves with additional means for failure detection intended for the control of dangerous movements on machinery.” The “Declaration of Conformity” document is available on the ROSS Web site at www.rosscontrols.com.

  • GibbsCAM 2010 Ships With Multiple Enhancements

Includes New Plunge Roughing, Additions to 5-axis and Advanced 3D Machining, Plus 64-bit Implementation

Gibbs and Associates, developer of GibbsCAM® software for maximizing programming efficiency of CNC machine tools and a Cimatron company, announced today that it is now shipping GibbsCAM 2010. This new release includes multiple new features, additions, enhancements, and productivity tools.

“We have been working very hard to provide customers new functionality across the GibbsCAM product family,” says Bill Gibbs, founder and president of Gibbs and Associates. “We added many capabilities to make programming and machining easier and more efficient, especially with new features in 5-axis and solids machining. We also implemented 64-bit operation to enable faster processing of long programs and complex parts, added support for new tools and tool holders, extended functionality within various modules, and extended and updated interoperability with various CAD systems,” he adds. “All this is in addition to the recent integration of VoluMillTM and making GibbsCAM compatible with the Windows® 7 operating system.”

GibbsCAM 2010 began shipping to new customers and maintenance customers in January 2010.

    Key GibbsCAM 5-axis Enhancements

These include more spiral machining options, new gouge check projection options, a new lead in/lead out “flip” option, a new axial shift damp option for trimming applications, and support for countersink and keyway cutters. More specific additions are the following.

Geometry Creation – A Surface Tools plug-in has been added to create surfaces for repairing or improving machinability of surfaces from solids.

Adaptive Cuts – This new option enables regulating the distance between paths based upon the angle of the surface to be machined to provide a consistent surface finish, regardless of surface angle.

Impeller Roughing – Has been enhanced with functionality that covers more contingencies, especially useful when roughing near and around splitter blades.

Tool Retraction – A new option, Retract Through Tube Center, enables retracting cutting tools from angled pockets while avoiding walls, especially useful for machining cylinder head ports and similar geometry.

    Key Enhancements to Solids Machining

New, More Capable Plunge Roughing – No longer a plug-in, it is a tile in the CAM palette, with the ability to calculate material removal strategies that accommodate carbide-inserted drills, which require special motion for no-drag retractions, while avoiding collision in tight or narrow areas.

Enhancements to Advanced 3D Machining – These include the addition of Hit Flats with specified tools for Pocketing, the ability to specify flatness tolerance in Flats Cut to ensure all desired “flat” areas are machined, locking high feed rate for Shortest Route and Minimal Vertical retract styles, addition of Trim to Ramp Advance as a Contour option for waterline cuts, specifying surface finish with step-over distance or scallop height parameters, and using Stock Bounding Box as an additional machining boundary.

Addition of Option for Stock – Facet bodies, generated from a previous machining process, or brought in through a data file, can now be used as initial stock in solid pocketing.

    64-bit Implementation

A significant development, the 64-bit implementation allows taking advantage of the more powerful, multi-processor PCs equipped with 4GB or more of RAM. This provides tighter interoperability with 64-bit CAD systems that are co-resident with GibbsCAM on a PC. Also, 64-bit operation reduces computation time when processing extremely long programs or working with complex geometry. It will also enable users to take advantage of system enhancements when running under the Windows 7 operating system.

    Even More Enhancements

GibbsCAM 2010 includes many more features, some for ease of use, and others to extend functionality, including enhancements to the user interface and for the Milling, MTM (multi-task machining) and Wire EDM modules, as well as new add-ins for data exchange to support Inventor 2010, SolidWorks 2010, and additional CAD file import and translation. Furthermore, the Macros menu was enhanced with changes for easy access, uninterrupted operation, and support for 5-axis and Advanced 3D processes and calls to plug-ins.

There’s nothing like kicking off the new year with a new look! Reality star Kate Gosselin really lets her hair down on the cover of the Jan. 18 issue of PEOPLE. The newly-single Octomom is almost unrecognizable — with her signature spiky haircut replaced with a head full of hair extensions.

“It’s good to have hair again,” she told PEOPLE of her longer new look, achieved with the help of celeb stylist Ted Gibson. “I never thought I’d have short hair for as long as I did. I feel like this is a fresh start, a fresh me, a fresh life.”

Do you like Kate’s new hair?

  • Newspaper Stories are Too Long. Let’s Fix Them.

Michael Kinsley wrote a column about why news stories should be shorter. It’s really good.

Newspaper stories take too long to tell us what’s new. Banal quotes from experts I’ve never heard of don’t help. Windy introductions to set the geopolitical stage are worthless. Thousand-word front-page articles that provide no more new information than a ticker bulletin aren’t marginally better, but mostly just longer.

The Internet provides the opportunity to break free of the newspaper straitjacket of inverted pyramids and column inches. Google is tinkering with a new thing they call “living stories.” These are topic pages for ideas like “The War in Afghanistan” that create timelines for news stories so you can follow developments and fit them into a storyline. That’s a good idea. Spencer Ackerman says individual writers should try the same thing by using topic tags and the blog format to create updating pages that follow a story’s development. That’s another good idea.

One can imagine the emergence of a kind of “story tree” where all the major developments of a big story like health care reform would live on an constantly updating page. Each new development could have two parts: What Was New (in a sentence) and Why It Mattered (in a paragraph). That’s it. No quotes because the voice is omniscient. No lede because the intro is already on the page. The Internet’s capacity for linking practically begs for stories to talk to each other in a way that is impossible on a single ream of paper. The best way to harness that capacity is to be brief and let your old work do some of the talking.

Finally, here’s a good round-up of reactions to Kinsley’s piece from Atlantic Wire.

  • Ken Block dropping trademark Subaru for two Fords

You know Ken Block as the star of those Gymkhana videos, which have made this corn-fed American rally driver an internet celebrity on YouTube. Usually seen whipping his trademark Subaru WRX STi around an abandoned airport and through empty hangars, Block makes the difficult task of rally driving look downright easy. From now on, however, you’ll be seeing him do his thing in a Ford rather than a Subaru.

The 42-year-old driver announced today that not only will he be driving Fords from now on, but in addition to competing in the Rally America Championship and X Games like always, he will also compete on the rally world’s biggest stage: the World Rally Championship. Block will reportedly be the first American driver to compete in WRC, and to get the job done he’s formed a new rally team with sponsors Ford, Monster Energy Drink, DC Shoes (the company Block co-founded), the video game Dirt2 and Castrol Edge.

What will Block be driving in 2010 if not a WRX STi? He’ll be behind the wheel of a Focus RS prepared by M-Sport for the WRC and Ford’s new rally Fiesta when off-roading in America for the RAC and X-Games. We don’t know which Ford he’ll drive in the next Gymkhana video, but rest assured because we’re told there will be another.
