  • UFC Plans To Sue Individuals, Despite The Cost Being More Than Any ‘Loss’

There’s something that just drives some executives nuts about the idea that someone might access their content “without paying” directly for it. We saw this last year when music industry execs kept saying they had to stop going to war against consumers, but immediately followed that up by saying that none of that mattered if they couldn’t stomp out “piracy.” It’s as if the second any sort of unauthorized use occurs, the entire “cost-benefit” analysis goes out the window. If it’s costing you more to try to stop unauthorized access, and it’s not working, and there are ways to embrace it that makes you more money, the solution should be simple: you stop worrying and start embracing.

Apparently that message hasn’t gotten through to the folks who own Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Perhaps it’s not too surprising that such a group’s only reaction is to fight, but when they even admit that fighting unauthorized access will cost more than any “losses,” you have to wonder how any executive at the company keeps his job. That’s a recipe for getting fired: “Hey, I’m going to undertake an action that will cost us more than not taking this action — oh, and it’s likely to piss off a bunch of our biggest fans as well.”

This isn’t a huge shock. Last month, a UFC exec was at that Judiciary Committee hearing about unauthorized access to live streaming sporting events, and played the role of the RIAA/MPAA lobbyists claiming “them stealers are destroying our business.” Given that, it’s no surprise that UFC is gearing up to go after both sites like Justin.tv and the individuals themselves. Apparently, UFC’s fight-first, think-later execs haven’t noticed how badly similar plans have backfired. Most of the streaming websites have pretty strong DMCA safe harbor protections, and suing users hasn’t worked out particularly well for the RIAA. Furthermore, pissing off your fans? Yeah, not such a hot move.

Meanwhile, the Torrentfreak article above does a really nice job breaking down just how many people willingly pay huge sums to watch UFC events on Pay-Per-View, and how that number keeps on growing. There was apparently a dip in a recent fight, but TF notes that it probably had more to do with one of the headlining fighters having to back out. What does become clear is that UFC has no problem convincing huge numbers of people to pay up huge amounts to watch its events. Pissing off a lot of fans with ridiculous lawsuits doesn’t make anyone more likely to buy.

Hell, even Joe Rogan, the comedian (and notorious hater of “joke stealers”) who also acts as commentator for UFC seems to think this is a bad idea, saying: “I think that kind of stifles innovation. It stifles the direction the internet is going. I like things being out there. I think people are always going to buy UFC pay-per-views. You’re going to get a much better experience watching it on your television than all stretched out looking fuzzy and pixilated. They’re trying to protect their money, but the internet is a strange animal.”

  • MailBrowser: Get More Out of Your Google Contacts

mailbrowser_logo_jan09.pngMailBrowser wants to make Gmail and Google Apps more useful by offering a consolidated view of all your contacts and attachments in a browser sidebar. In this sidebar, you can quickly search for contacts, see the latest emails you received from a specific contact, add calendar events and attach notes and tags to a contact. In many respects, MailBrowser looks a lot like Xobni for Gmail.

    Sponsor

    Features

MailBrowser is currently only compatible with Internet Explorer and Firefox on the Mac (OSX 10.5 and higher) and Windows, though the team is working on Safari and Chrome versions as well.

mailbrowser_example.pngThe plugin offers a rich set of features, including support for multiple Gmail and Google Apps accounts and rich previews of attachments. Another nice feature is the “trend” section that appears at the bottom of the sidebar. Here, two graphs show a timeline view of how many emails you sent and received from any given contact.

MailBrowser stores all your data locally on your hard disk, so no information is ever shared with the service. Because all the data is stored locally, MailBrowser also keeps a copy of all your attachments on your machine. The application also syncs all the data back to Google Contacts in the cloud, so any changes you make on one computer will automatically appear on another machine.

    Xobni for Gmail

In many respects, MailBrowser is very similar to Xobni – a popular Outlook addon. Xobni, however, puts a stronger emphasis on giving you additional information about a contact by looking at the contact’s social networking profiles. MailBrowser plans to add this functionality in a future version. Currently, the service can only display details about a contact’s domain and website.

    More Features Coming Soon

MailBrowser has big plans for the future. The company plans to offer support for more services (Yahoo Mail, Live Mail, etc.), integration with enterprise apps like Salesforce and integration with social media services like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

    Verdict

For now, MailBrowser works just as advertised. It doesn’t yet offer the rich feature set of Xobni, but the company is clearly working on that.

If you have a very large mailbox, it can take a while for MailBrowser to download and index your information. Luckily, the download process starts with your most recent email, so that you can be up and running long before your last email has been downloaded.

  • WALL STREET JOURNAL: Hopes Dim for Higher Cadbury Bid

    By MICHAEL CAROLAN

LONDON — Cadbury PLC shares slipped to within pennies of Kraft Foods Inc.’s offer price Wednesday as hopes of a vastly improved offer from the U.S. food giant receded.

Cadbury shares had slipped a further seven pence, or 0.8%, by 1400 GMT Wednesday to 772 pence, following a 3.2% fall Tuesday. The drop followed a double blow for Cadbury’s investors Tuesday.

First, Nestlé SA ruled itself out of the running for Cadbury, damping hopes of a competitive auction. Then, later in the day, Kraft’s largest shareholder, Warren Buffett, fired a shot across Kraft’s management’s bow, warning them against overpaying for the U.K. confectioner.

Mr. Buffett’s warning — and his pledge to vote against a Kraft proposal to issue 370 million shares to fund the deal — may have put a cap on the amount Kraft can pay for the deal.

In an unusual move, Warren Buffett issues a public warning to Kraft, which is trying to take over Cadbury. The News Hub analyzes why Mr. Buffett acted.

Analysts and investors had been hoping for a higher offer from Kraft of up to 900 pence a share. Any revised offer is now thought unlikely to go far above 800 pence.

“Cadbury’s management may have increased the probability of remaining independent but the potential for a major advance on Kraft’s original offer may also be losing momentum,” said Clive Black of Shore Capital.

Kraft’s original cash-and-share offer — comprising 300 pence in cash and 0.2589 new Kraft shares for each Cadbury share — valued the Dairy Milk maker at £10.2 billion, or 745 pence a share.

Fluctuations in exchange rates and Kraft’s own share price has seen the value of the offer dip as low as 712 pence in recent weeks. Mr. Buffett’s intervention Tuesday–through his Berkshire Hathaway Inc. investment company — sent Kraft shares almost 5% higher as concerns the company would overpay abated.

Paradoxically, this raised the effective value of the bid to 765 pence at Tuesday’s close, just seven pence short of Cadbury’s share price. The spread between the share price and the offer price is now narrower than it has been since Kraft first approached Cadbury on Sept. 7.

“The value of Kraft’s acquisition currency has therefore risen, giving succor to the conspiracy theorists who have speculated overnight that this was Berkshire’s ultimate objective,” said Martin Deboo of Investec Secutities.

Mr. Deboo still sees a bid of 820 pence as possible, providing Kraft comes up with more cash for the deal rather than more equity. “Kraft could increase the cash element of its offer from 300 pence to 450 pence and stay on the right side of an investment grade rating,” he said in a note.

A higher offer looks essential, however. As of Tuesday, Kraft had received acceptances for its offer from Cadbury’s shareholders representing just 1.52% of the U.K. confectioner’s shares, as the vast majority of Cadbury’s shareholders appeared happy to wait for a higher bid.

In a separate development, the U.K.’s business minister Peter Mandelson again waded into the takeover saga Wednesday with a veiled threat to Kraft.

“Companies making acquisitions should set out transparently and publicly their long-term plans for the assets they propose to acquire, including company headquarters, R&D sites and main plants,” said Lord Mandelson in a speech.

In recent weeks Lord Mandelson has warned Kraft against trying to make a “quick buck” on Cadbury and said that any buyout would have to respect the company’s “work force and the heritage and quality.”

He has also conceded however that he has “no statutory power to intervene in this case.”

  • Toyota Camry Named Best Selling Car of Dec. ‘09, Apocalypse Draws Nigh

    2010_Toyota_Camry

Confirming the suspicions harbored by many automotive journalists that the vast majority of the car-buying public has zero interest in vehicles that are actually fun to drive, the Toyota Camry has earned the top spot as the best selling car of December 2009. As if that fact itself were not discouraging enough to end the year on, the even less impressive Toyota Corolla managed to snag the Number 2 spot, followed closely by the Honda Accord (3rd), Honda Civic (4th), and finally, the Chevy Malibu (5th). The singular reason for this, at least by our good friend Timothy Cain’s analysis, appears to be that many consumers value basic functions over frivolous things such as “performance” and “aesthetics.” This would explain the quasi-success of the PT Cruiser.

Surprisingly absent from the elite 5 was the Ford Fusion, which is perhaps the only vehicle outside of a Subaru lot that enjoyed a successful run in 2009. Another notable exclusion was the 2009 & 2010 MY BMW 328i, which despite the brutal recession has been spotted in overabundance in the fetid armpit alternatively known as “New Jersey.” With no rational explanation for this anomaly, RideLust is forced to conclude that we are living in the end times. We hope this scores us mad page hits from those Nostradamus nutjobs.

  • Childhood Abuse May Lead to Migraines

Being abused as a child has a lifelong impact on people, even if they think they’ve left the abuse behind. In some cases, it may come out in personality issues and in others, physically, such as high stress levels or illness.

iStock_headacheMigraines, one of those mysterious ailments that affect so many people, is one of the long-lasting physical effects that may result from childhood abuse. Of course, that’s not to say that if you have migraines, you were abused – absolutely not. But, researchers have found that a significant number of people who do live with migraines were somehow abused or neglected when they were children.

Child abuse and neglect are, unfortunately, still very much present in today’s society. In the United States, the U.S. Department of Health has said that in 2007, state and local child protective services investigated over three million reports of abuse or neglect. Broken down, the children were victims of:

    • child neglect (59%
    • emotional abuse (4%)
    • sexual abuse (8%)
    • physical abuse (11%)

Previous research has noted a connection between abuse and future migraines and a new study, published in the January issue of Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain has come to the same conclusions.

Researchers had 1348 patients with migraines fill out surveys that measured physical, sexual, and emotional childhood abuse, and physical and emotional neglect. The researchers also asked about physician-diagnosed history of pain conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia (FM), interstitial cystitis (IC), and arthritis.

Illnesses such as these, other than arthritis, often have no explainable origin. Researchers have been trying to find out what could be causing them, but they’ve not had much success. IBS affects a person’s life by causing pain and discomfort, and by making social situations difficult in many situations. It can cause either extreme diarrhea or constipation. Interstitial cystitis can be just as socially isolating because of the pain and discomfort of always feeling that you need to urinate. Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia can cause overwhelming fatigue and pain, and there is not much in the way of treatment for any of these disorders.

What the researchers found was that those people who had migraines and who had been abused or neglected had a higher incidence of the other pain conditions, much more so than people who had not had similar maltreatment.

In the study population, 61% had at least 1 comorbid pain condition and 58% reported experiencing childhood trauma either by abuse or neglect. The number of different maltreatment types suffered in childhood correlated with the number of comorbid pain in adulthood.

Specifically, physical abuse was associated with a higher incidence of arthritis; emotional abuse was linked to a greater occurrence of IBS, CFS, FM, and arthritis; and physical neglect connected with more reports of IBS, CFS, IC, and arthritis. In women, physical abuse and physical neglect was associated with endometriosis (EM) and uterine fibroids, emotional abuse with EM, and emotional neglect with uterine fibroids.

While findings such as this can’t help prevent the illnesses, including migraines, it can give the treating health professionals something to work with. If the patients have a background of abuse, perhaps therapy to help them deal better with the past may result in a better physical outcome.

  • My Intro

Hi everyone! My name is Melissa and I’m a middle school teacher in Texas.

I was diagnosed as a Type 2 on December 1st. I had suspected for a while that something was going on. I currently weigh 266 (after losing 60 pounds) and was having some tingling in my feet and toes. I hadn’t seen a doctor in 20 years (severe phobia) but screwed up my courage and went.

I’ve been taking metformin for a month now (500mg in the morning and 500mg with my evening meal) and I’m not sure if I’m seeing any results. I’ve been eating fewer carbs than I had been and avoiding white potatoes, bread and pasta).

My 2hour after eating bg levels are under 140 where my doctor said they should be, but my morning fasting number is consistently in the 130s. It doesn’t matter what I eat the night before. I could have xmas dinner or a salad, it’s 135 in the morning. My doctor wants that down to 100. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

Anyway, I look forward to participating here. I’ve already learned so much from reading the posts.

  • How to Find a Cowpooling Source

HappyCows How to Find a Cowpooling SourceI was going back over the MDA archives this week, thinking about what went right and what went wrong with past posts. There are always going to be regrets when looking at past work, whatever its nature. That’s just how these things work.

But this is the internets, not print, and I can quickly hop in and make changes to the past with just a few keystrokes. Or, I can write an honest appraisal of my previous transgressions and come up with a post of restitution. This is that post of restitution. Today, I’m admitting that my last post on cowpooling was a bit lean. It’s not that I trimmed the fat; it’s that the fat was never even there in the first place (hmm, old Cordain might agree). Consider this post a dollop of grass fed butter in the pan that is MDA’s cowpooling content, perhaps even after deglazing all the tasty bits with a hearty Zinfandel. Today, I’m going to tell you how to find a cowpooling source so you can buy grass fed beef in bulk directly from the supplier.

Cowpooling, in case you aren’t aware, describes the practice of banding together with other likeminded, carnivorous individuals to purchase an entire cow that is then slaughtered, butchered, and frozen for delivery or pickup. The cowpool-able cows are frequently grass-fed, local, and organic, and if you’ve got the freezer space, cowpooling is a great way to get quality meat for a fraction of what it’d cost in a place like Whole Foods. There’s really nothing quite like having a freezer full of hearts, organs, steaks, chops, roasts, shanks, bones, and tongues in your home. Whenever my freezer is stocked, I giggle uncontrollably whenever it’s time to pick a cut for dinner. It really is exciting.

Unfortunately, for most people, there aren’t any easy solutions to the cowpool source question. It’s becoming more and more widespread, but it remains a niche market, a small but vocal trend. There are a few concrete, well-run online communities that promote and organize cowpools between members, but they tend to serve distinct areas of the country. From what I can tell, the Bay Area Meat CSA (a Ning community) is the most active, and it isn’t even all that robust or vibrant. Still, if you happen to live in the California Bay Area, sign up and peruse your Group’s page to set up cowpools with other nearby members. Usually, an official liaison is selected, who then is tasked with sourcing an animal, contacting the ranch, and relaying information back to the other members. How well – or how often – this actually works remains a mystery. I happened upon the BAMCSA’s sister network, based in Southern California, and it was essentially a barren wasteland. There were a few half-hearted cowpooling prospects proposed, but no one seemed to commit to anything. I suppose it’s possible there were backroom dealings occurring via email.

There’s also Slow Food USA, an organization devoted to appreciating good, usually local food, including meat. Again, you run into the same problem as with the CSA Ning groups – there are just too many chapters with not enough active members. The link above directs you to find a chapter in your area, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

The only surefire way to find a good cowpooling source is through honest legwork. As always, Eat Wild remains the best directory for US pasture-based farms. Since you’re busy people, I’ve scouted ahead and made a quick list of some farms that seem to support bulk purchasing. There are plenty more, but this is a decent start. All you’ve got to do is get a group of people willing to buy in. Try family, friends, or even ask around on the MDA forums for help.

Alabama: Narrow Gap Farm of Brewton, AL only sells by the 1/2 or full cow, but you’ll have to call for pricing, as it varies by market. Virginia: Babes in the Wood has a buying club; join it and get access to bulk amounts. Border Springs Farm offers whole or half lambs, and Hollin Farms sells wholes or sides of yearling beef.

Washington: From Bradrick Family Farms, order whole lambs or quarter, half, and whole cows. Eagle Perch Ranch offers dry-aged, custom cut whole and half cows to customers, and Green Pastures Farms sells primitive, heritage sheep descended from medieval Scottish sheepy ancestors as whole freezer lambs.

West Virginia: Shagbark Mountain Cattle farms offer whole beef at $3/lb, half beef at $3.24/lb, and quarter beef at $3.75/lb. And they cut it how you want it ([email protected]).

Wisconsin: Anderson Farm sells both beef and hog by halves and wholes. Babb Creek Grassfed Red Angus beef is sold for about $2.89/lb hung, $3.46/lb finished ([email protected]). Millstone Mountain Farm sells whole, half, and quarter cows for $3/lb cut and wrapped; vacuum packing is an extra 25 cents per pound. Why does Wisconsin have such great prices on grass fed beef?

Wyoming: Cameron Ranch offers whole carcasses of cow and lamb, and they even have a first time rancher program. Prairie Monarch Ranch sells buffalo by the whole, side, or quarter ([email protected]).

As you can see, there are many options out there, and I missed far more than I included. Check out EatWild for yourself and dig up even more choices. It’s still the single-best resource for pasture raised animal farms, along with maybe Local Harvest, but you’re going to have to make some calls and write some emails. Still, a little bit of effort is totally worth having a freezer full of delicious grass-fed meat for a fraction of the regular cost.

  • Full Color Ereader Shown Off By Liquavista [EReaders]

Coming from the womb of Philips’ Research Labs, Liquavista is working on a full color ereader. Specifications aren’t offered as yet, but you can tell by the picture above that it’s very much angled at magazine and newspaper reading.

Building upon their LiquavistaBright platform, the new reader uses their LiquavistaColor technology for that full color screen and “electrowetting” display technology.

The ereader prototype sounds pretty promising for now, but with plenty of ereaders being let out of the bag this week, Liquavista’s conservative 2010/2011 launch estimate will have to be brought forward to actually gain any traction. Particularly with tough competition from that little-seen Nook. [Liquavista]

  • Netgear announces two 3G/4G/WiMax routers at CES

    Screen shot 2010-01-06 at [ January 6 ] 9.21.21 AM

With the nationwide roll-outs of 4G and WiMax finally on the horizon, it’s just about time to upgrade the ol’ gadget collection. Netgear just announced a couple of new toys that might pique the interests of the road warriors out there: wireless routers that play friendly with 4G/WiMax USB dongles.

They’re offering up two models: the MBRN3000, and the DGN2200M. Both are 802.11n routers built to share 3G/4G/WiMax connections, but the DGN2200M’s got a bit of a trick up its sleeve: a built-in DSL modem. While this model will work as an on-the-go router, it’s primarily built for business that need a backup connection; if your DSL cuts out, it’ll automatically fall back to the mobile broadband dongle.

The sans-DSL modem model should launch in March for around $149, while we should see the DSL-totin’ one in April for $179.

  • 15 Greatest Proponents of Marijuana Legalization

Marijuana is called many names, across different cultures, largely due to the fact that it’s been around for over five thousand years. An estimated 162 million people in the world use cannabis every year, so it shouldn’t be surprising that so many big names touch the green stuff too. Some celebrities are more forthcoming with their love of weed than others — ahem, Willie Nelson — but you might be surprised at a few that fight for the drug’s legalization. Here are 15 of the greatest proponents of marijuana legalization.

    Bill Maher

Social critic, comedian and television host Bill Maher gets passionate about what he supports. Along with gay marriage and PETA, he supports the legalization of marijuana quite publicly — although that’s just his style. He’s even on the advisory board for NORML, and on the 2009 debut of his HBO show Real Time he proposed just how to solve the economic crisis: by legalizing marijuana.

    Adam Carolla

Radio shock jock and television personality Adam Carolla is not a pot smoker anymore, so he says, but that doesn’t stop him from supporting the cause — he’s even joined the MPP’s advisory board. He’s said that pot will eventually win the fight: “It has to… We don’t have a bigger fish to fry than pot? It’s going to happen. It’s just going to happen. It will come to pass,” stated Carolla.

    Peter Coyote

Peter Coyote, American Renaissance man, has dabbled in acting, directing, and authoring books as well as screenplays. Born to a Jewish family, he has since converted to Zen Buddhism — so it’s understandable that he has a wide cultural experience and mindset. He supports marijuana and believes that “jailing people for the mild alteration of their consciousness will appear to future generations as cruel and draconian as the tortures of the Inquisition appear to us today. May the reputations of today’s jailers suffer the same fate as Torquemada’s reputation today.” Strong words.

    Jack Black

Funny man Jack Black has entertained us with the likes of both film and music. In a recent interview, he spoke of his own drug use — trying acid and cocaine as early as the ninth grade. When it comes to pot — he still smokes — but it’s now “an occasional celebratory jay… not a wake-and-bake scenario anymore at all.” Either way, he smokes it, supports it, and is on the MPP advisory board.

    Jack Nicholson

Actor, film director, and producer Jack Nicholson is so good at what he does, that he’s been nominated for 12 Academy Awards, and he’s even won two of them. He’s a big voice in Hollywood, so when he says something — people listen. “My point of view, while extremely cogent, is unpopular… That the repressive nature of the legalities vis-a-vis drugs are destroying the legal system and corrupting the police system.” Cogent may be an understatement, the man can speak, but what the movement lacks in numbers, guys like Nicholson make up for in words.

    Jennifer Aniston

While some may be surprised at the fact that American sweetheart and actress Jennifer Aniston smokes bud, she’s admitted her love for it on several occasions. While she was with actor Brad Pitt, they apparently smoked all the time. Now she will “Enjoy it once in a while — There is nothing wrong with that.” She’s been caught by the paparazzi before, smoking in private — we’re sure she’d enjoy the legalization.

    Jesse Ventura

Retired professional wrestler turned tv show host Jesse Ventura has dabbled in so many different things in his 58 years, no wonder he looks like a wreck now. He’s known to express his support for medical marijuana, but is even more adamant about his support for the complete legalization of the drug. His mother lived through Prohibition, so he took some pointers from her and believes that:

“The war on drugs is a failure for the same reasons Prohibition was a failure… Just imagine if we could find some way for addicts to get their drugs cheaply, safely, and legally. The bottom would drop out of the illegal drug market. We’d see a huge drop in organized and violent crime.”

    Johnny Depp

Award-winning actor Johnny Depp has quite an interesting take on drugs, especially marijuana. He was known to take quite a few drugs in his day — so he speaks from experience. In fact, he’s stated that he wants his kids to get drugs from him if they’re going to try them, instead of some other dealer. He’s been criticized for the statements, but he holds strong and maintains his support for legalization.

    Joycelyn Elders, M.D.

Dr. Joycelyn Elders, 15th Surgeon General of the United States, went on to become a professor of pediatrics after she was fired by former President Clinton for her radical views. And by “radical” views, we mean the support of condom distribution in schools, abortion rights and suggesting the legalization of drugs to reduce the crime rate. She’s on the advisory board for the MPP and supports them “because it is a professional organization attempting to change our destructive marijuana laws.”

    Kirsten Dunst

Actress Kirsten Dunst, who gained international fame with her role in Spiderman as Mary Jane Watson, is known for her views on weed. Not only does she like the drug, but she believes that “America’s view on weed is ridiculous” and that it would make the world “a better place” should weed be legalized.

    Michael Bloomberg

Michael Bloomberg, current Mayor of New York City, has smoked weed before — and “enjoyed it.” Back in April 2002 he was featured in an ad that some campaigners had started circulating in protest to Bloomberg arresting pot-smokers. He wasn’t thrilled that they were using his name and words, but it still stands that he’s fond of the drug. We think he’s in denial for political reasons.

    Morgan Freeman

Another award-winning actor in support of legalization, Morgan Freeman still smokes to this day at the ripe age of 72. In an interview with the UK newspaper The Guardian, the legendary actor told reporters he had given up his use of hard drugs, but that he would never quit his relationship with Mary Jane. In fact, he referred to marijuana as “God’s own weed.”

    Richard Branson

Sir Richard Branson, British industrialist and chairman of Virgin Group, has a net worth of over 2.5 Billion dollars to go with his douchey attitude — but in all fairness, he’s a good douche. He’s one of the world’s richest people, but he spends his money in aggressive, forward-thinking ways. Just look at Virgin Galactic. Staying true to his out-of-the-box thinking, Branson supports the legalization of marijuana — and said he would even sell it in Virgin stores if it were openly available.

    Stephen King

Stephen King, writer of contemporary horror and suspense, is all for legalization. Instead of avoiding the topic, as many celebrities and politicians do, he embraces it. He thinks that “marijuana should not only be legal [but that] it should be a cottage industry. It would be wonderful for the state of Maine. There’s some pretty good homegrown dope.” If weed were legalized, he also believes that it would be even better, due to the use of commercial fertilizers and greenhouses.

    Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt, actor and film producer, calls himself an artist when it comes to rolling a joint. Apparently he has stopped smoking recently because it turns him “into a doughnut,” but he’s been known to publicly support marijuana — he smoked on several movie sets, including Ocean’s Twelve and Thelma and Louise. He wants pot legalized as much as he wants gay marriage legalized, and he won’t stop supporting either until changes are made.

  • Investigan la migración de los manatíes

    BBC

  • QUOTE: You know that old saw about a plane flying

You know that old saw about a plane flying from California to Hawaii being off course 99% of the time—but constantly correcting? The same is true of successful startups—except they may start out heading toward Alaska. Many dot-com bubble companies that died could have eventually been successful had they been able to adjust and change their plans instead of running as fast as they could until they burned out, based on their initial assumptions. Pyra was started to build a project-management app, not Blogger. Flickr’s company was building a game. Ebay was going to sell auction software. Initial assumptions are almost always wrong.

  • Lil Diner Plate Holder: Get Ridiculously Serious About Preventing Spills [Food]

I don’t have kids myself, but I hear that they can be kind of messy at mealtimes. The solution: a platform that is clamped to the table with suction cups hold the bowl or plate in place.

Unfortunately, you can’t actually clamp the food onto the plate, so my guess is that kids will simply change tactics on you by scooping up the food with their hands and hurling across the room. Face it, you just can’t have nice, clean things anymore. [Wireless Catalog via 7Gadgets]
