  • Watch Live TV on Your iPhone

    Screen shot 2010-04-12 at 3.37.54 PM.png

As if the iPhone didn’t do enough already, now you can watch live television on it. Elgato’s EyeTV app enables streaming of live TV signals over Wi-Fi as well as 3G connections.

Users who run EyeTV 3.3.3 and have a compatible TV tuner can enjoy live TV, watch EyeTV recordings, browse the comprehensive Program Guide and start recordings on their Macs or schedule them for later. Setting up EyeTV for iPhone is easy: on a local Wi-Fi network no configuration is needed. For 3G or Wi-Fi connections to a remote Mac, Elgato offers “My Eye TV”, a free locator utility.

EyeTV for iPhone requires a Mac computer running EyeTV 3.3.3. Streaming TV requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. For sending the live signal over a 3G connection, Elgato recommends the Turbo.264 HD which enables “adaptive streaming” for the best picture possible under varying network speeds.

EyeTV for iPhone 1.0.2 is available from the App Store at a price of $4.99 and as a free update for existing EyeTV for iPhone customers. EyeTV 3.3.3 is available as a free update for EyeTV 3 users. EyeTV tuners are available at the Elgato Online Store, at Apple retail stores and from local Mac resellers.

  • Straight Up By Joseph Romm: The G.E.R. Review

The first question you might ask about Joseph Romm’s new book, Straight Up (Island Press:$19.75 from Amazon), which compiles some of the finest and fiercest posts from his widely read blog Climate Progress, is, why is it a book at all?

Consider the paragraph below, from a Dec. 8, 2009 piece on an op-ed by Sarah Palin in The Washington Post:

The newspaper that just editorialized, Many — including us — find global warming deniers’ claims irresponsible, has just published a grotesquely irresponsible and falsehood-filled piece on climate science and the hacked emails by that leading light of science, ex-Governor Sarah Palin.  This is a woman that recently embraced the fact-free birthers.

Here’s the same paragraph in Straight Up:

The newspaper that just editorialized, “Many — including us — find global warming deniers’ claims irresponsible,” has just published a grotesquely irresponsible and falsehood-filled piece on climate science and the hacked emails by that leading light of science, ex-Governor Sarah Palin.  This is a woman that recently embraced the fact-free birthers.

    Notice the difference?

The book naturally lacks the hyperlinks that are the lifeblood of blogs and permit bloggers to use shorthand because proof is only a click away.

But the excision of links leaves Romm, who has a Ph.D.in physics from MIT but is the son of a journalist and is, at core, a media creature, in a vulnerable place.

There are no distractions when you’re reading him on cellulose and he can’t instantaneously respond to criticisms with his chainsaw wit. This can be a frightening place for bloggers to be.

Fortunately, his arguments and the wicked prose that describes Palin as a “leading light of science,” stand up well.

Readers of Climate Progress, an offshoot of the liberal think tank Center for American Progress, are familiar with the cast of heroes and villains in Romm’s world and it should take only a few sentences for a reader of Straight Up to catch on.

There are, of course, chapters on Darth Vader Dick Cheney and ExxonMobil in Straight Up, which is being released in time for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, but Romm reserves his most ferocious scorn for the “Status Quo Media.”

This latter group, exemplified for Romm by former New York Times climate reporter Andrew Revkin, are worse than lazy with their “he said, she said” reporting and tendency to soften the hard science of global warming with irrelevant drama and questions of personality. (see Gore, Al.)

In his foreward, Romm writes that he seeks to emulate George Orwell in confronting “the toughest of truths” and he evinces a palpable sense of disappointment that other media cannot seem to confront those truths about global warming.

Writing that global warming is up for debate means delaying action and a continued march toward temperature increases of 5.5 degrees celsius, or 9 degrees fahrenheit, and catastrophe for the planet and humanity.

There is no such thing as a principled disagreement on these issues and Romm mocks “delayers and deniers” with the skill of a New York Post headline writer and old school Yellow journalist.

Romm reserves his most ferocious scorn for the ‘Status Quo Media.’

“Palin jumps from birther to flat earther,” Romm proclaims in one sub-headline. “America is the Saudi Arabia of energy waste,” he writes in another piece. Scientific reports of skyrocketing temperatures are “stunners” and exclamation points (!!!) are deployed with stunning regularity.

His solutions to the climate crisis, if they lack the gusto of his political takedowns, are strikingly easy to follow.

The technology that can save mankind and limit warming to no more than 2 degrees celsius already exists and needs to be deployed on a massive scale at the afforable cost of 0.12 percent of global GDP per year.

It’s a waste of time to hope that a “breakthrough technology” will save us, since experience shows us that it takes an energy source 25 years from commercial introduction to gain 1 percent share of the global market.

We don’t have that much time.

Still, what’s missing from Straight Up is time: the time that Romm might have taken to research his pieces deeply instead of relying, as he does in one piece, on concentrated solar power company Ausra’s website; or the time that might have passed before Romm christened President Barack Obama “The Green FDR”.

But any man who can write, “In this post I will lay out ‘the solution’ to global warming,” is clearly in a hurry to spread his gospel.

It’s too bad his editors left that subheadline out of the book.

  • Motorola Android flip-phone leaks

Images of a new Motorola Android smartphone have leaked, with the unnamed model having a flip cover form-factor similar to the Verizon Motorola Krave ZN4.  The touchscreen handset has a transparent cover and a row of touch-sensitive controls; it’s also a MOTOBLUR device, it seems, going from icons on the homescreen.

According to IT168, where the images leaked, the phone is in prototype stage.  Interesting it has dual network indicators showing in the status bar, which some are speculating could mean it has dual-3G capabilities for better coverage.  Other tipped specs include a 5-megapixel camera and 720p HD video recording.

Of course, it could also be a Motorola-styled copy, running a ripped build of the company’s Android OS and themed around their popular Ming/Krave design.

  • The Vatican’s U.S. Lawyer May Bring the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act Back to the Supreme Court

    by Julian Ku

In this fascinating profile of Jeffrey Lena, the lead (and perhaps only) lawyer for the Vatican in defending sex-abuse related lawsuits in the U.S., one also gets an update on the status of the various U.S. litigations against the Vatican.  The current Supreme Court petition for consideration is Holy See v. John Doe. The Court hasn’t yet decided whether to take the case, which raises a very boring but important question of foreign sovereign immunity. Since the Court seems to take lots of these cases, and it has sought the U.S. government’s views on this case, there is a decent chance it will make it to the Court.

  • Metropole Hotel South Beach “Jersey Shore Suite” Could Fetch $2K Per Night

Snooki, The Situation, Vinny, and the rest of the cast of MTV’s Jersey Shore is busy filming the second season of their hit docu-series in Miami — and at least one popular establishment in the sunny Florida city is vying to cash in on the worldwide appeal of “GTL.” The posh Metropole Hotel in South Beach — where the cast is presently lodged — has designed a special “Jersey Shore Suite,” which management plans to rent out for $2000 a night after filming returns to Seaside Heights next month.

According to reports, many walls of the old hotel were torn down to make suitable living quarters for the cast of the show. The Metropole isn’t the only hotel getting a boost in business thanks to reality TV’s favorite guidos and guidettes: Earlier this year, the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City introduced the “Jersey Shore Package,” which offers fans of the wildly-popular MTV series the chance to recreate the same “high-energy nightlife fun” that the Shore stars experienced when they visited the establishment in an episode of the popular show that first aired last fall.

Jersey Shore returns to MTV in July.

  • Thoughts Of Growing Herbs In An Apartment

     Herbs_pot2

I’m starting to use fresh herbs in my cooking way more because I like how fragrant and tasty the herbs are compared to stuff from a bottle. Buying fresh herbs though when you are a single person living in an apartment gets kind of expensive because fresh herbs are usually sold in bundles and I never need that much for my cooking at one time so I end up throwing much of it away which does sadden me. I’ve tried freezing them and it usually ends in a fail on my part.

So after seeing this really cool chocolate mint plant, I’ve been thinking more and more about growing some herbs right here in my apartment. I figure too it would be a nice way to have living things in my place…with the bonus that I can eat the plant later on.

     Herbs_pot

I haven’t started yet. My parents are here this week so maybe I can get mom to help me going on the herb project since she has a green thumb. For now, I searched the interwebs and found some really good tips on how to get started with growing herbs in an apartment.

  • The Neverending Torture Debate: Marc Thiessen’s Rebuttal of Jane Mayer

    by Julian Ku

In interests of being “fair and balanced,” I thought I’d post Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen’s rebuttal to Jane Mayer’s “devastating” New Yorker review of his book on Bush-era interrogation policies. At this point, neither side is really arguing the law much, but both seem focused on policy. Thiessen’s rebuttal looks pretty strong (as was Mayer’s review).  (see below for excerpts)

    Here’s Mayer:

His account of the foiled Heathrow plot, for example, is “completely and utterly wrong,” according to Peter Clarke, who was the head of Scotland Yard’s anti-terrorism branch in 2006. “The deduction that what was being planned was an attack against airliners was entirely based upon intelligence gathered in the U.K.,” Clarke said, adding that Thiessen’s “version of events is simply not recognized by those who were intimately involved in the airlines investigation in 2006.” Nor did Scotland Yard need to be told about the perils of terrorists using liquid explosives. The bombers who attacked London’s public-transportation system in 2005, Clarke pointed out, “used exactly the same materials.”

    Here’s Thiessen:

Mayer quotes an official from Scotland Yard (headquarters of London’s Metropolitan Police) who says this account is “completely and utterly wrong.” When I asked one former senior CIA official what to make of this, he laughed and asked: “How would he know?” The CIA, he explained, has no liaison with London’s Metropolitan Police — it deals with MI6 (the Secret Intelligence Service) and sometimes with MI5 (the Security Service). An official from the Metropolitan Police, he said, would have no way of knowing what intelligence the CIA shared with MI6 or MI5, much less the ultimate source of that intelligence. Another former intelligence official agreed with this assessment, telling me: “The British deserve a great deal of credit for this operation, but a significant portion of the ‘back room’ was comprised of American intelligence information and operations.” That includes intelligence provided by KSM.

    Here’s Mayer:

Thiessen’s claim about Khalid Sheikh Mohammed looks equally shaky. The Bush interrogation program hardly discovered the Philippine airlines plot: in 1995, police in Manila stopped it from proceeding and, later, confiscated a computer filled with incriminating details. By 2003, when Mohammed was detained, hundreds of news reports about the plot had been published. If Mohammed provided the C.I.A. with critical new clues–details unknown to the Philippine police, or anyone else–Thiessen doesn’t supply the evidence.

    Here’s Thiessen:

In fact, I never make any such claim in my book — obviously it would have been impossible for a program that started in 2002 to have disrupted a terrorist plot in 1995. What I do write is that during CIA questioning, “KSM describes in detail the revisions he made to his failed 1994–1995 plan known as the ‘Bojinka plot’— formulated with his nephew Ramzi Yousef — to blow up a dozen airplanes carrying some 4,000 passengers over the Pacific Ocean” (i.e., these are revisions he made to the plot for the next attempt). I explain (Courting Disaster, pages 7–8) that years later, in 2006, an observant CIA officer noticed that the activities of a cell being followed by British authorities appeared to match the revised plan KSM described, and that the CIA officer shared this information with the British authorities. At first they were skeptical, but later they acknowledged that this was in fact what the cell was planning. It was this critical information from KSM that uncovered the terrorists’ true intentions.

Readers may decide on their own who is more persuasive. I have a feeling that it largely depends on whom the reader would believe more at the outset, rather than on reading the two articles. But let’s be honest. There is no “devastating” takedown that completely discredits Thiessen or an absolutely complete rebuttal here.  There is just a disagreement and lots of give and take.

  • Sandra Bullock Asked To Return Razzie

As if Sandra Bullock weren’t dealing enough, the Oscar-award winning actress — who is in the midst of a humiliating cheating scandal with her wayward husband Jesse James — has been asked to return her Worst Actress Golden Raspberry Award!

America’s Sweetheart, now 45, was handed Hollywood’s most dreaded prize in a ceremony last month after her chuckleworthy role in 2009’s All About Steve — the good sport even showed up at the event with a wagon full of All About Steve DVDs for Razzie fans. However, the ceremony’s founder John Wilson has urged Sandra to give back the prize because she was handed the original trophy, which is worth thousands of dollars, instead of a replica version intended for her.

“We are ready to take the unprecedented step of asking a winner to return a Razzie. As Sandra was in such a rush after winning Worst Actress she ran off with the original handmade prototype which has been present at ceremonies since the 1980s.”

  • Merry (Wo) Men of Bath stage a hold-up…

Five shady-looking youths skulk in the shadows of a multi-story car park, heading towards a wealthy banker as he strolls towards his expensive car. They’re clutching a large pair of pliers, their hoodies up…But this isn’t a dangerous attack… it’s the Robin Hoodies! The Robin Hood Tax is causing a stir with its new film, ‘The Banker 2’, starring Ben Kingsley and a host of rising stars.

But you don’t have to be famous to stage a robbery…merrily proved with plenty of Sherwood spirit by the Bath Oxfam group! They chose to wear their green masks and feathered caps rather than their hoodies to hold up their MP, Don Foster (Lib Dem Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary), pinning him down on his party’s position on the proposed financial transaction tax. Not only did he ‘rob’ a local ‘banker’ from the Bath Oxfam group, he provided a list of key names to contact at Liberal Democrat head office and a pledge to support the proposal. Furthermore, the bandits got an article in the paper! A few more emails and hold ups later, the Liberal Democrat manifesto came out more clearly in favour of a financial transaction tax than their initial position. Still not good enough, but the Bath Oxfam Group are now decided – the occasional hold- up helps to move things along!

The Robin Hood Tax now has a following of 80497 positive voters. This phenomenal support shows just how relevant this initiative is to people in the UK – and therefore also to the voters in the upcoming election. The main parties have now given their official responses to the RHT, and although some progress is being made, we must maintain the momentum if we want the Robin Hood Tax to remain a key election issue. Whilst the Labour party wants only a global agreement, the Conservatives stated this wasn’t essential but still did not secure plans for a tax on banks. Meanwhile, The Liberal Democrats said they were committed to tackling global poverty through a financial transaction tax, but we hope this means they are prepared to move forward without waiting for the rest of the world.

Why not follow in the footsteps of the Bath Oxfam Group and hold-up your MP? Dressing up as Merry (Wo) Men has never been easier, particularly when you can download a template to make your own green mask here. If you’re not quite ready to draw your bows and arrows, you could attend your local hustings and raise the issues of the RHT with your prospective candidates. Or perhaps you’d just like to go along and sit in the audience wearing your Robin Hood mask?! However you choose to act, let’s keep the momentum on The Robin Hood Tax going in the South West!

Email Fiona Remnant: [email protected] for any support and advice on how to get your campaigning message out there!

To show your support for the campaign, vote ‘yes’ on the Robin Hood Tax website, spread the word on Twitter and Facebook and tell everyone you know!

  • Oxfam team distributes aid in earthquake hit China

International agency Oxfam said on Saturday (17 April 2010) that its first team of aid experts had arrived in the town of Jiegu, in Yushu County of Qinghai, the region most seriously hit by the China Earthquake.

The team is now working in a temporary camp set up on a racecourse in Jiegu and distributing blankets for 2,000 survivors. About 20,000 people are living in this camp.

“The temperature here during the daytime is around 10 degrees Celsius; at night, it drops to below zero. The freezing weather is a huge challenge for the people made homeless by the earthquake, including people living in the camp in Jiegu. Oxfam is working with the local government to address people’s urgent needs; the government is providing food and tents,” said Aman Yee, Deputy Programme Manager of the Rural Development and Disaster Management Team of Oxfam Hong Kong.

“Qinghai is one of China’s poorest provinces. Poverty is the key reason why people are vulnerable to disasters. Oxfam is liaising with local government units to plan the next step; we target to assist the most impoverished people in this crisis,” Aman Yee added.

Oxfam will fly blankets from Yunnan to Qinghai. Sichuan Airlines is providing free transportation. Oxfam’s first priority for shipment is 1,000 blankets; next will be 600 tents.

Another Oxfam team is on its way to Shiqu County, Sichuan Province, which was also hit by the earthquake; the team will distribute 1,000 blankets and 1,000 rolls of durable waterproof fabric as temporary shelter.

Oxfam has assisted in previous emergencies in Qinghai, such as the massive snowstorms in 1997 and 2008.

Oxfam has an initial plans to spend HK$2 million (£170,000) on relief and rehabilitation projects.
