  • Saskia Diez – Papier Bags

    SaskiaDiezPapier-1

From the Sakia-Diez site: Take up the familiar, give it further thought and add something new: A collaborative project between Saskia and Stefan Diez, the “Papier” series is an experiment in revising the classical typology: the two designers have pointed out the basic requirements to a travel bag – durability, protection and light weight – and sought for an appropriate material other than the traditional choices of leather and reinforced textiles. The “Papier” bags are made of Tyvek®, a synthetic paper that is extremely lightweight – 135g for the bigger and 115g for the smaller bag – but at the same time exceptionally robust, both water- and tear-proof. The material is completely recyclable. Apart from that, one will appreciate the high-end finishes applied to such seemingly banal material as paper. Silkscreen printing techniques gives it a particularly attractive look. “Papier” won the German Designpreis 2010.

Available at Saskia-Diez and select retailers world wide.

  • Sophnet. Spring/Summer 2010 Collection

    sophnet-2010-spring-summer2

As the Japanese designers start rolling out their Spring/Summer 2010 collection, we get a better sense of what styles and trends we here in the U.S. will be adapting to our own wardrobe. But in the case of Hirofumi Kiyonaga, trends aren’t his target. He’s just making clothes as he sees them to be. For Sophnet’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection, we get a very laid back and relaxed sense for the season’s range. Patterns appear dominant with flower images, stripes, plaids, polka-dots, and more. The collection reflects the tropical surroundings, but in a very casual way, so the feeling as you wear it doesn’t feel too much as if you’re just there for a vacation.

    aubin-wills-spring2010

One should usually be weary of so called “spin off” brands when it comes to fashion, because usually the trend is that the “spin off” is lower priced, lower quality, and geared towards the younger folk. The plus side to this spin off is it goes from goes from the “younger” University looks of Jack Wills, towards the older more sensible, more mature recent graduates of the Aubin & Wills customer. For Spring 2010, those recent graduates looking to upgrade their wardrobe can look to pieces such as large knits, summer suits, linen trousers, cotton blazers, coats, and sweaters – all the basic staple one needs to transition from University life to the real world.
