Are you having a tough time dealing with getting older? You’re not alone — and, according to Dr. Vivian Diller, you don’t have to feel bad about caring that your eyelids are starting to droop. Q: Why do women often have a tough time accepting the changes that occur with aging?
A: There is a generation of women who didn’t expect that they would be having such a tough time, which is why I wrote this book. My generation — and I’m 56 — grew up with the belief that our looks would take a back seat to other aspects of ourselves and our identity. The women’s movement broke those barriers and said that looks were not supposed to matter. The interesting thing I’m trying to bring to this is that it’s not a superficial issue. We’re trying to give women of stature and accomplishment permission to allow themselves to be shaken by this experience, but also to take care of their looks without feeling like it’s a betrayal of all they grew up believing. That experience for women may start on the surface, but it runs much deeper. It sets off all sorts of complicated, existential issues of “What am I about and why does this matter?” and “How have I been convinced that my looks shouldn’t matter, when of course they do?”
